The Academy Awards for 2016 are facing a new wave on controversy today after the ceremony kicked off with host Chris Rock hosting on location from a cotton field in Louisiana.
Event organisers were reportedly taken by surprise by the fallout, apparently not being aware that slavery had ceased in the United States in 1865.
“I’m not sure we should be held accountable for not being history buffs,” one source inside the Academy told reporters.
“When we hired Chris, we did so on the assumption that he was doing it for free anyway…this changes everything frankly”.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has already faced heavy scrutiny this year for not having one person of colour nominated for an award.
Despite this, the academy has held firm in its position.
“It would be very difficult to have black people involved in the awards EVERY year, I mean how many films about slavery would we be expected to make?” questioned a spokesperson for the group to a room full of stunned silence.
