Andrew Fifita is facing a barrage of criticism today after it was revealed he donned a pro-Queensland message on his armband during Wednesday night’s game.
“I just wanted Slater and Smithy to have a big game, that’s all,” a sheepish Fifita told reporters from the front yard of his house this morning.
“I don’t know what the big deal is? Just because I wanted Qld to win didn’t affect my ability to do my job effectively – if anything it helped because I could leak tries for the maroons directly.”
Fifita was heavily criticised after the match for not showing enough energy and enthusiasm required to beat Queensland, a charge the Cronulla prop angrily denies.
“Look, that’s just rubbish,” Fifita told us.
“I was trying my best out there but carting the ball up and cheering Queensland on all at the same time was always going to take its toll – the important thing is my team won on the night.”
